Eleven aircraft again flew out to bomb an enemy strongpoint in the SAN MARTINO area. This formation took off at 11.00 hours and approached the target area flying in two sections. The leader of the first 6 aircraft commenced the first attack from South to North, bombing from 8,000 to 2,000 feet at an angle of 60 degrees. The leader completed his attack and climbed steeply to the N.E. to observe results. At this point, Nos. 3 and 4 in the formation were in their dive. A Large puff of black smoke was seen to burst from the No. 4’s aircraft and it immediately burst into flames, continued diving in a ball of flame until it crashed at M.R. (N) 406228 (FORLI Sheet 100, 1:50,000).
The pilot of this aircraft was F/SGT WATERS, W.F. (1318727) and the aircraft was Spitfire IX.E. P.L. 372. F/SGT WATERS, made no attempt to bale out. No visible anti-aircraft fire could be seen,
