Shot down over the Kuban bridgehead in Spitfire Mark Vb EP248 of 57 GIAP (Guards Fighter Regiment) on 10 May 1943, possibly by the German fighter ace Oberleutnant Joachim Kirschner. Later shot down again, flying an aircraft other than a Spitfire, and taken prisoner of war on 15 February 1944. Returned to the Soviet Union after the war.
