ANTHONY GERALD De BAILLOU MONK was the son of Lt.-Col. Max De B. G. Monk, Indian Army, and of Eileen Monk (nee Porter); nephew of H. H. De B. Monk, of Chelsea, London. His mother died in India in 1928 at the age of 36 and his father, Max Emile de Baillou Goldman Monk died in France in 1931 at the age of 43. Anthony’s parents had married in 1916 in India. I have assumed he was born in India like two of his siblings but this is not confirmed.

On 5 July 1942 while flying with 145 Squadron, Flt/Lt Monk was one of 8 Spitfires sent on an interception patrol. They met 10 Bf 109s escorting 15 Ju 88s. Monk failed to return and it is believed he was shot down by one of the fighters.

His sister Gemma had been killed on 5 May 1942 in a Japanese machine gunning on Myitkyina Airfield, Rangoon, Burma. His brother Geoffrey was a Lt Col in the Middlesex Regiment and was killed on 19 May 1944 at Monte Cassino, Italy.
