He was killed whilst flying in Spitfire VB, EP616 of No 92 Sqn, which was shot down in flames by a Bf 109 near Buq Buq. He is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial.
Patrol near Sidi Barrani, attacked enemy column sending trucks up in flames & overturning lorries. F/Sgt Blades shot down by M.E.109 his machine was seen to hit the ground & burst into flames.
