Robert (known in his Units as Jack) was the son of Robert and Jeannie Strang of Invercargill. He joined the RAFVR under the Empire Training Scheme, trained initially at Harewood and Wigram and graduated in March 1939 before travelling to the UK. He then trained at OTU Hawarden and from September 1940 served with 65 Sqn before transferring to 485 in June 1941 as a Flight Commander with the formation of the National Units.

He married while in the UK . His wife was Marguerite Strang, of Muswell Hill, Middlesex.

He was lost on 25 January 1942 on a Squadron Sweep when his Spitfire AB788 fell out of formation and dived into the sea. Oxygen supply failure was assumed to be the cause.
