Archie joined 602 as a PO in 1936 and was instrumental in shooting down a JU88 the first enemy aircraft shot down over the UK near the Firth of Forth he was transferred to 605 Sqn and promoted to Flt/Lt flying Hurricanes he rose to Sqn/L with 605 and was credited with 21 kills though it should have another 2 credited to him. He was killed on the 1st Nov 1940, Hauptmann Wolfgang Lippert, who was flying a Bf109 fighter of Jagdgeschwader 27 was credited with this however according to Luftwaffe records they had no planes in the area at that time and it's suspected he was the subject of friendly fire which was not as uncommon as a lot of people think.
