F/O E.J Seagrief. He qualified to wear the flying badge on the 17th March 1944, thereafter posted to Cairo and Completed OTU at Abu Sueir on Spitfire Mk 5. He joined 237 (Rhodesia) Squadron during August 1944.
He took part in combat operations in Italy and Southern France harassing the enemy. They were based near Ancona on the Adriatic and later after the invasion of Southern France near Toulouse.
He finished the war before his 21st birthday and logged a total of 615 hours 55 minutes. Total combat flying hours 88 hours 45 minutes = total combat sorties 72.
Broke one Spitfire Mk9 by approaching to land on the runway at Ancona and never saw the squadrons Dodge crew truck on the runway which had broken down blocking the runway - the crew driver saw this Spit approaching, grabbed his stuff and ran away. He landed and pranged into the truck and nosed over and ended up on his back with a gunsight rash on his face.
They were equipped with Spitfire Mk 9 during his tour of Ops.
