Comments / Questions:by: Peter Phelps 453 Sqdn RAAF 2016-11-23 01:19:10 The period spent in Perranporth - 20th August to 15th October 1943 - brought 453 squadron’s greatest single-day combat success. On the offensive sweep near Brest, seven Spitfires of the unit led by Sqn/Ldr D.G. Andrews engaged eight Messerchmitts Bf 110 flying low over the water. Five enemy aircraft were shot down to the loss of one Spitfire. Although the serial number of FU-Z is obscured by the sky band, it has been repeated in small letters on top of the fin and it could be established that this aircraft was EP605. Produced in August 1942 at Castle Bromwich, it survived the war and was one of the aircraft supplied to Portugal in 1947. (spitfiresite.com) reply |
