At 11.30 hours on 7 October P/O Graham C Hunter crashed in Spitfire L1023 and was seriously injured. He has been approaching Turnhouse in hazy conditions when his aircraft stalled and crashed on the edge of the airfield. Hunter was admitted to the military hospital situated within the walls of Edinburgh Castle (today the hospital is home to The National War Museum of Scotland). He was discharged on 4 November and after a period of sick leave returned to 603. During the coming months he underwent remedial surgery and went before countless medical boards in an attempt to regain his A1 flying category."
