by: Red Dragon Sqn Ldr D J V Henry DFC RNZAF 41 Squadron 2017-04-11 19:54:24

During the late afternoon Squadron Leader Henry failed to return from an armed recce. He had been leading a formation of four Spitfires of 41 Squadron from Volkel airfield, Holland. Near Dummer Lake, Germany, a train was sighted and he immediately attacked. Intense light flak from gun-pits alongside the railway track and from a flak car on the train opened up, and his aircraft was hit in the radiator. He immediately turned for base, but was last seen entering cloud at 6,000 feet, still over Germany. It was subsequently reported that he was forced to land his Spitfire and subsequently became a prisoner of war later in the day. He was able to escape whilst on a forced march to Munich and returned to England on the 19th April 1945.
