Flew from Digby with 412 Squadron flying P7856 credited with 1 Bf 109 destroyed ten miles off Boulogne (source: Kostenuk, RCAF Squadrons). The spitfire he flew is famous for another occupant, P/O John Gillespie Magee Jr. who was an American flying with RCAF squadron 412, and the author of the now famous poem "High Flight".
Further information on MacDonnel indicates (link to right, Canadian Virtual War Memorial) that he was killed overseas, and is buried in Surrey (Runnymede memorial) , United Kingdom after serving with 124 Sqdn on April 24, 1942 (do they mean 412 Squdron - is this a typo) *does anyone have further information on this pilot*.
