John Burton Shanks joined 124 Squadron on 1st May 1942. He crashed during support of Operation Jubilee, the raid on Dieppe on 19th August 1942. He became a POW, POW No. 26869, during his time as a prisoner of war at Stalag 344 Lamsdorf he kept a diary. He never mentioned this to his family, but it was discovered after his death in 2014. It has since been published by his daughter in the book “ To Hell in a Handcart” ISBN 978 1838597 542 (Jeni Kingston)
