After training in the USA under the Arnold Scheme, John Round flew Spitfires with 91 Squadron on the UK south coast in 1942 and 1943 and was awarded the DFC. He then held several flight instructor posts before being posted to the Far East, via Egypt and India. He served with 607 Squadron and was promoted to Flight Lieutenant in early 1945. He was killed in action in his Spitfire while on patrol near Rangoon, Burma, on June 5 1945. He had notched up over 1000 flying hours, mainly in Spitfires.

Extract from 607 ORB.
18/09/1944 - Another new Pilot has been posted to us, he is F/O Round DFC. His Experience with A.D.G.B. on Spitfires has been considerable and although he looks upon the Mk VIII as an OTU aircraft we feel sure that he will adapt himself rapidly to Service conditions overseas.
