Gordon William Lash Matthews was the son of Gordon Paxton Lash Matthews and Margaret May Matthews (nee Shone) of S. Rhodesia. The CWGC records that his brother Sergeant Keith Lash Matthews (778843), an Air Gunner in 150 Squadron flying Wellingtons, also fell on 25th August 1942, aged 20.
266 Squadron were escorting Blenheims near Hazebrouck on 3 July 1941 with 257 and 401 Squadrons. About 50 enemy aircraft were encountered and dogfights resulted. Sgt Matthews was posted missing, believed killed, and is buried at Dunkirk Town Cemetary.
