Fred earned his wings at No. 2 SFTS Uplands, Ottawa in 1941 and was a flying instructor at No. 13 EFTS St. Eugene, Ontario. He became a Spitfire Photo recce pilot at the very end of the war. He stayed in the RCAF and ended his career as a Wing Commander and Deputy Base Commander at Cold Lake, Alberta
