Roylance Arthur Henwick DFC of the SAAF, transferred to the RAF and flew for 80 Squadron for the majority of his time. He flew Hurricanes, Spitfires, Tempests and Typhoons, and ended with a record of 11.5 enemy aircraft downed. He was one of the very few pilots to fly for 3 air forces, as he was seconded to the USAAF (334 Squadron, where they called him 'Dutch') for three months to fly Mustangs when they started daylight raids and needed experienced fighter escorts. Shot down twice in occupied territory and walked back both times (despite being posted as KIA). After the war moved to Northern Rhodesia in the colonial service, worked in Feira, Kasempa, Solwezi, Lusaka and ended as DC in Broken Hill in '64. Mafeking. Started off as a bomber pilot. 1 ADU ’43. 80 Sqdn 17.7.43. 13.7.44 left 80. Att US 334 FS, 4 FG, 8 AF from 20.7.44. 25.9.44 FTR form escort mission to Germany in P-51 QP-M. Evaded. Back with Sqdn 28.9.44 till 25.10.44. 3 TEU 10.44. 80 Sqdn 6.2.45. 17.4 Temp V NV964 190 and two damaged at Grevesmuhlen in late morning. OC from 19.4.45. DFC 20.7.45. Left 80 2.11.45
