13Jun44 FSGT D.G Saunders of 453 Sqn RAAF departed RAF Ford to ferry Spitfire MH487 to RAF Red Hill. For reasons that will never be known the plane crashed on Coombe Hill just to the west of Eastbourne, Sussex. The pilot was killed in the impact and his Spitfire was destroyed.
RAAF pilot 417422 Flight Sergeant Douglas Graham Saunders (21) of Leabrook in Adelaide, South Australia was KIFA and is buried in Section 4 Row N Grave 15 at the Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey. He is commemorated on Panel 105 of the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, ACT. He is also remembered on the World War II Honour Roll, National War Memorial of South Australia on North Terrace in Adelaide.
