Sgt Ron Thomson was commissioned P/O 15th Nov 41 and promoted F/O 1st Oct 42. He was convoyed to Algeria with the main party of 154 Sqn during Operation Torch, the invasion of North Africa, landing in Algiers on 13th Nov 42. After an arduous 3-day truck journey they were reunited with the advance party of pilots in Djidjelli, and Thomson flew his first operational sortie on the 23rd.
He flew continuously with 154 throughout the campaign, travelling with the squadron though Algeria and Tunisia, and, after the fall of Tunis in May 43, on to Malta and Sicily.
On 7th Aug 43, operating from Lentini in Sicily, his aircraft was hit. He baled out over Catania, returning safely to the squadron.
He was promoted Acting F/Lt in March 43, later Gazetted F/Lt (war substantive) in Nov 43, and was awarded the DFC in Oct 43 (see citation above)
