Martin Charlier was CO of 2/1/2 when war broke out. Relocated to France on 13 May 1940, he Returned to Belgium when France capitulated. He escaped to Great Britain, via Spain in January 1942 and enlisted in the VR of the RAF on 12/03/1942. Sent to 58 OTU (05/05/1942) , he finally arrived at 350 Sqn on 8 July 1942. On August, 27, 1942, a section of 350 Sqn, led byF/Lt du Monceau de Bergendael, flew Circus 208, escorting a dozen of Boston's to Abbeville, clashed with a group of FW-190. Charlier flying on Spitfire MKVb AB912 was shot down and MIA.

From the squadron diary:
'Circus 208: Whilst escorting 12 Boston’s to Abbeville/Drucat Airfield, the squadron is attacked by a dozen Fw-190 (I and II/JG.26). During the melee, the "Duke" proceeded to shoot-down one of his assailants while E. Plas damaged two others. H. Picard and M. Charlier are shot-down ( one of both was shot-down by Major Wilhelm-Ferdinand "Wutz" Galland, 5./JG26). Charlier's body was never found. H. Picard, who was wounded, was rescued by the Germans and made a POW after having spent 6 days and nights in his dinghy.'
