Raymond "Van" Van de Poel was member of the 2° Rgt of the Aé Mil when the War commenced. Evacuated to France, he returned to Belgium after the French capitulation. In short-order he escaped to Great Britain, arriving on 1 August 1941. "Van" Enlisted into RAFVR, 16 July1941 as P/O. Flew with 122 Sqn (26 December 1941) before he joined 350 (BE) Sqn ,on October 6th, 1942. Raymond "Van" Van de Poel was promoted F/O, 1st January 1943.
On July11th, 1943, Sgt. Grawels and F/O Vandepoel were returning from a training session; during their approach to the Ouster circuit the two Spitfires collided. Both pilots were killed.
