Lelarge Lucien joined the Aéronautique Miltaire on 07 May1934. Posted with 2/I/2Aé at Schaffen when War broke out, he moved with his unit into France (22 May 40). Repatriated on 21 August 1940, he became unemployed in occupied Belgium: this would not do. On 20 October 1940 he escaped Belgium with Paul Siroux, heading for France and trying to reach England via Spain and Portugal. However, both men were arrested at Lassne (01 May 40) and imprissoned at Barcelona (02 May 41). Both men then escaped from train during their transfer to Miranda ( 21 July 1941). Both were then arrested again at Burgos (01 Aug 41) and sent to Miranda Camp (15 Sep 41).
Liberated on 09 January 1942, Lelarge and Sirouxwere transferred to Gibraltar and finally arrived in England on 11 March 1942. Lelarge enrolled into Belgian Forces in Britain on 03 April 1942 and was sent to the Depot AéM (16 Apr 42). Training started with RAF N°2 Receiving Center (21May 1942) followed by 5 PAFUS (07 Aug 42) and ending with 58 OTU (20 Oct 42). He was then posted to 350 Sqn - where he arrived on 12 January 1943. The Squadron diary noted the following:
12/01/1943 - A new arrival of pilots from OTU: L. Lelarge, P. Siroux and F. Verpoorten.
14/06/1944 - 2 Escort missions of Mitchell’s are flown to Alençon. After mechanical problems, F/O L. Lelarge "A" Flight had to bale out over the channel and was rescued. R. Huens, R. Jaminé and M. Doncq reinforces 350 Squadron. Convoy patrol.
23/07/1944 - F/L P. Siroux and L. Lelarge are transferred to 349 (Belgian) Squadron as Flight Commanders. F/L J. Lavigne takes command of "B" flight. RAMROD: Escort of 54 Mitchell's to Montford.
Upon leaving 350 (BE) Sqn, Lelarge sent to 84 GSU on 21July 1944 but joined 349 Sqn, as flight commander. Rested on 26 January 1945, Lelarge became as instructor .the Belgian Training School. Subsequent postings saw him joining CTU-Woodlands (17 Mar 45) and, finally, 12 Ferry.
He left the RAF on 07October 1946 and joined SABENA. Lucien Lelarge died on 15 June 1995
