Morel Mathieu escaped from Belgium in 1941 intending to reach England. However, he was arrested in Spain and imprisoned at Miranda. Upon release he did make his way to Britain and arrived in September 1941.

Engaged into Belgian forces in Great Britain on 20 October 1941, he was send to the relocated Depot of Aéronautique Militaire on 22 January 1942. Enlisted into Belgian Section of the RAF, 12 February1942, he trained at: 17 ITW (15 March 1942), 6 EFTS (17 June 1942), 2 ACDC(19 July 1942), 31 EFTS (26 September 1942), 34 SFTS (1 January 1943), PDC -
Ottawa - where he was promoted Sergeant - (16 April 1943), 7 PDC (24 May 1943), 5 PAFU (15 June 1943). He was qualified on the Spitfire at 53 OTU (26 October 1943). Sgt Morel arrived at 350 (BE) Sqn - as a Flight Sergeant - on 15 January 1944 and was Commisioned P/O on 30 July 1944. The Squadron diary noted the following:

14/03/1944 - Practice Army co-operation, dusk landings, bombing, formation flying and night flying. F/O Lavigne lost its port wing on take off (MN-Z , MK192). J. Morel has to bail out after his engine cut. Flying just above the sea, he successfully ditched near fishing boats and was rescued. F/O Siroux and F/Sgt Laloux cut each others wings on landing.

06/08/1944 - Ramrod: Falaise, F/Sgt Morel "B" Flight lands in France with engine trouble.

17/08/1944 - F/Sgt Morel hit by flak.

11/11/1944 - J. Morel returning from training mission is killed whilst landing.

As noted above, P/O Morel died in a landing accident on 11 November 1944.
