Albert Van den Haute was a sergeant at the 2nd Regiment of the Aéronautique Militaire when the Germans invaded Belgium. Wounded on the first day of the war, he was hospitalised until 20 December 1940. He evaded on 22 January 1941 but was arrested in France and interned at Camp d'Agde (15 February 1941). Liberated on 24 February1941, he escaped to England (on 22 June 1941).

Van den Haute enlisted in the RAFVR, as P/O, on22 August 1941. He commenced training at 61 OTU on 9 December 1941 and was posted to 124 Sqn, 28 April 1942 and 350 (BE) Sqn on 28 June 1942. Promoted to F/O on 22 August 1942, he was posted on 9 November 1942, and joined 165 Sqn. Further postings saw him at RAF Station Kenley, 11 February 1943 - where he was promoted F/Lt on 22 August 1943; 66 Sqn, which he joined 8 November 1943, 2 FlyingInstructor School, 9 February 1944; RAF College - SFTS, 30 June 1944, where he stayed until the End of War, at which time he left the RAF.

Albert Van den Haute died at Brussegem, on 28February 1998.
