Hi, the serial looks to be '?V239'. I also have concerns about the first character being 'P'. Could 'MV239' be a contender?

reply: Kevin Charles I too think it is MV239 2024-09-07 11:56:41

I think it could be and have moved the image to MV239. There are only two possible ?V239 Spitfires MV239 and PV239. PV239 went to Russia, MV239 went to Australia.

There's a website:
https://pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/spitfire/A58-758.html
which details its history in Australia.

Firstly as there are no squadron codes I'm assuming it wasn't allocated to a squadron, so from the wartime history:

Wartime History
On June 26, 1945 delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as Spitfire Spitfire HF Mark VIII serial number A58-758. This aircraft was immediately placed directly into storage. By May 1946 stored at RAAF Richmond until authorized for disposal.

Postwar
In September 1949, acquired by the Sydney Technical College. In 1961 acquired by A.J.R. "Titus" Oates of Sydney. In 1963 purchased dismantled by Sid Marshall of Bankstown and stored outdoors until 1972.

And the dismantled bit seems to fit as there's no wings or engine in the photo and it is stored outdoors.
