He suffered engine failure and bailed out six miles east of Heesch. The pilot struck the tailplane of the aircraft as he jumped, knocking him unconscious and preventing him from deploying his parachute. Upon landing, No 412
Sqn's CO, Sqn Ldr M D Boyd, quickly proceeded by road to the area
where Cowan had abandoned his fighter and duly discovered the pilot's
lifeless body.
