Stanley Alfred Greeves joined 74 Squadron after training in 1941 flying Spitfire MarkVs in support of Atlantic convoys then on to 73 Squadron on Hurricanes before being posted to 145 Squadron in Egypt in preparation for the El Alamein campaign where he flew in combat until 5 April1943 when his new Spitfire IX suffered engine failure and came down in enemy territory.
He was captured by the Italian forces then handed to the Germans who transferred him to prison camp spending the remainder of the war principally in Stalag Luft 3 Bellaria as a POW. He was liberated by Russian forces after surviving a forced march to the east.
