He was killed whilst flying in Spitfire LF VIII, A58-310 (ex JF847) of No 54 Sqn, which dived into Darwin Harbour during a test flight, probably as a result of 'blacking out' due to not wearing his anti-G suit. He is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial.
