His first solo flight was on May 3, 1941 in a bi-wing Tiger Moth while stationed in Regina, Canada. By October of the same year he was assigned to a training squadron in Yorkshire, England where he soloed in his favorite aircraft, the Supermarine Spitfire Mk Vb.
After completing training in the Spitfire, John joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) 122 Squadron, flying side by side with his Wing Commander, the famous “Paddy” Finucane. John was Paddy’s wingman the morning that he was shot down over the Channel having just completed an offensive patrol over Northern France where they had just attacked railways and an airfield.
It was during his time in England with the RCAF that John met the love of his life. John and Joy Argent were married on January 14, 1942, spending the next 66 years as husband and wife until Joy’s passing on February 5, 2008.
