Newton MacDONALD
276 Squadron pilot KIA 1943-04-05 (BM414)
A section of Spitfires and a walrus were scrambled to search for crew of Fortress reported in sea 10/12 N. of DUNKIRK.
Two dinghies, containing 5 of the crew, were located 5 miles off shore and the survivors were picked up by an H.S.L.
Whilst orbitting the dinghies, P/O N. MACDONALD, in a Spitfire, complained of engine trouble and was then seen by his No. 1 to dive into the sea, with black smoke pouring from the engine. Despite a continuous search maintained until dusk, no trace of the pilot or aircraft could be found.
