Malcolm Jack Ritchie joined the RAAF in January 1941, marrying Dorothy in May before travelling to Canada and the UK for training. He trained with Flying Officer Laurie McIntosh

They had a daughter he would never meet.

He was posted to his first squadron, 66, in February 1942. On 20 March he was over the sea completing an air-firing exercise and stalled at low altitude and crashed into the sea 5 miles WNW of Portreath near Gull Rock. An ASR Lysander was sent up but only small pieces of wreckage were found.

Malcolm is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
