Joined 421 Squadron RAF Fairwood Common, South Wales 15th September 1942 from OTU. Sadly killed on Tuesday 29th September 1942 after crashing his Spitfire into a hillside in poor weather conditions. The hill is called Moel Cynhordy and is located near Maesteg, South Wales. Sgt MacKay is buried at Killay (St. Hilary) Churchyard, Swansea. The crash site has not been positively located and eyewitnesses to the accident have since sadly passed away.
