Fritz, my father, and always know as “Fred’”, was born in Berlin to Prof. Dr Max Kurrein. He was targeted by the Nazis and emigrated his family to Palestine arriving in early 1933.
Fred worked surreptitiously for the Haganah, as did his father who founded a secret weapons factory.
Fred travelled overland to then Rhodesia and joined the RAF, where he trained in Tiger Moths and Harvards.
He was awarded his wings on 17 March 1944.
He trained on Spitfire Vs and joined 185 Squadron on 30 September 1944 at Pontderra flying Spitfire IXs.
He flew a total of 14.40 operational hours, and then trained on Mustang III and IVs.
