1945-01-01 AFC W/O George FRANCIS 71 OTU
Notification Only London Gazette No. 36866, Dated 1945-01-0.
Below is good information from forum.rafcommand.com
He had been born in San Francisco, educated in England and worked for his father on Jersey, in the Channel Islands, before travelling to South Africa and later New Zealand in 1937, all by the age of 21. When war broke out he was living in Hamilton and joined the RNZAF from there. His service had been with 32 Squadron, both in the UK and in the Middle East, and in 1945 he received the AFC. At Smokey Schrader's invitation Francis got a transfer to the Meteor squadron 616, which shared the same strip (Lubeck), just before 486 disbanded.
Kiwi simply lived for flying and was in the air as often as possible. His post-war service and travels were as varied as his past, highlights of which were demonstrating Vampires in the tropics, and flying Dragonfly and Sycamore helicopters in Malaya against the communists. For the former activity Kiwi was rewarded with a Bar to his AFC, and later a DFC, establishing what is thought to have been a rather unique record: being decorated on all three types of aircraft - piston, jet and helicopters.
