Pilot Lyon was shot down by enemry flak, whereupon his spitfire crashed in a farmer's field near Lorient, France, and was killed. Previously, in the run to D-Day he flew constantly, and provided aerial support on Omaha and Gold beaches on D-Day itself.
A nephew persisted after the war in having the authorities identity his grave site ("known unto God") and change the no-known grave status. The full article is listed on the right in the telegraph link.
