Otto Smik was born in Georgia to a Slovak father, and, eventually left Slovakia to join the RAF. Moving through Czech and RAF squadrons, e.g. 122, 222, and 310 (Czech), he became the 5th most successful pilot of the Czechoslovaks. He was awarded the DFC in Nov 1943, and the most successful Czechoslovak pilot that year. On ground attached (an agressive pilot) near Kampen / Zwolle, his plane was hit, and both his spitfire and another crashed, killing them both. He was eventually buried (after mistaken identity burial) at Canadian war cemetery (Adegem), before being finally repatriated to Slovakia, near Bratislava.
