Comments / Questions:by: Red Dragon Captain T Johnsen RNoAF 2017-03-19 21:47:34 Born March 14 1919, studied in England, joined Air Force shortly after Norway invaded. After training in Canada and attending an OTU in England, joined 64 Sq. on April 8, 1942(Sgt. pilot).On 29 June his Spitfire BM465 SH-B was attacked by four FW190s. He escaped to the mid Channel, returning with only one bullet hole in his aircraft. Commissioned prior to his first claim(25 March 1943). Immediately thereafter posted to 122 Sq.(promoted to acting Captain). July 15/43 awarded US Air Medal for having escorted US bombers on 17 occasions. (investiture held at US Embassy, London).Posted out for rest on Dec. 10/43, he was sent to 132 Sq. (May 1944) to command B Flight. but later that month was moved to 84 GSU(Group Support Unit). In June '44 to 602 Sq.(A Flight Commander). DFC approved May 19, 1944(presented to his widow on March 14, 1945 after being announced in Feb.'44). He claimed two on 17 July 1944 with this new squadron. Shot down in MK614 LO-B August 1 while staffing MT east of Conde, France. He was buried (originally) in France and a statue of Icarus falling that stood at the gravesite was removed at the family's request and is now in the Norwegian Armed Forces Aircraft Collection (Gardermoen. north of Oslo).
