Form 540 LT.COL. VAN DORP, Dutch Padre, visited the Squadron. F/O E.C. SILK took over Adjudant duties. 16 aircraft took part in armed reconnaissance over the Battle Area. 12 sorties were abortive due to weather. 1 MET moving North East at A.3944 damaged. 1 MET moving North West at A.4142 not attacked due to flak. F/O VLUG was flying in Yellow Section over the Battle Area with F/LT. DE WOLFF as Yellow 1. After 10 minutes flying F/O VLUG called up to say that he had seen time transport on the road and was going down. Later F/O VLUG was heard to say "I want to go home straightaway" and asked for a homing. He was then heard to say "I'm just North of WESEL and I'm afraid I can't make base". F/O HOMBURG, Yellow 3,went to North of WESEL but could not find F/O VLUG and returned to base. A message was later received from Operations that the aircraft had been found at A.074417 with F/O VLUG dead in the cockpit. No further details available at present.
