He was the 2nd person to fly the prototype Spitfire K5054.
He was chief test pilot for Vickers flying all Spitfire variants throughout the war and beyond (52). He liked the XIV variant best. Of note, he was able to fly the FW 190 when one mistakenly landed in Wales.
Not just a test pilot, he also saw action as a fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain, shooting down two enemy aircraft.
He died in 1996. He became the first president of the Spitfire Society after retiring on the Isle of Man post-war, after a long career with both VIckers then BAC (marketing executive).
