W/O Frederick Charles HAMPTON (54695) died on 1944-07-14 - Spitfire VB ER550

(14-07-44)
Two more Spitfires flown by F/O G.A Martin and P/O F.C Hampton were off from base on the second offensive of the day. Yugoslavia again being the hunting ground and Droani the area. Two staff cars East of Dragočaj were found stationary. Both were attacked and one of them destroyed. At Tarčin two locomotives were attacked and destroyed. The surrounding buildings and camouflaged emplacement at Tarcin were also strafed. The Spits returned to Dragocaj (where they attacked the staff cars) and strafed at least six people who appeared to be interested in the burning cars. The second car was set on fire and at least one body claimed. At a point approximately 15 miles North of Imostski at 9,000 feet, P/O F.C Hampton developed engine trouble to an extent that he had to bale out. The pilot cleared the aircraft, the parachute streamed but failed to balloon. F/O Martin landed at Vis at 15.40 to report the position of the body of P/O Hampton before returning to base.

SON OF FREDERICK CHARLES AND KATE HAMPTON, OF WEST CHILTINGTON, SUSSEX.
