RAFVR, always known as Ken
I will not attempt to describe much Bio, as it is all explained in great and amusing detail in his book "Make it Do"
Everybody should read it!

For the formal record, Ken was promoted from the ranks to P/O 03/09/42 (Gazetted 29/12/42), F/O 03/03/43 (Gazetted 11/06/43, ), and Fl/Lt 03/09/44 (Gazetted 22/09/44)

He joined 234 Sqn at Ibsley in early 1942 straight from OTU, with very few hours on Spitfires. He was then posted to 242 Sqn at the end of September in preparation for Operation Torch, and flew with them in North Africa.
Following a fortnight of appalling losses by 232 Sqn at Victoria (Souk-el-Khemis) he was transferred from 242 and flew with 232 from late April 1943 till the final German surrender a few weeks later

He suffered engine failure as the squadron was transferring to Malta on 5th June 1943, crash landing on the tiny Mediterranean island of Linosa, from where he was eventually taken to Stalag Luft 3 as a PoW (number 3098)

After the war he continued to fly in the RAF for two years, finally returning to civilian life in October 1947

Do read the book!

It was an excellent read, and well written by the pilot himself, showing just how tough the African campaign was, the hardscrabble conditions, the losses, the improvisations to eat/sleep/fly/fight and still keep going.
