W/O Bill Gadd enlisted into the RAAF on the 8th November 1941, here he started at the Initial Training School then onto Elementary Flying Training School followed by Service Flying Training School.
On the 27th November 1942 Bill Gadd took up an attachment to the RAF and left Australia, arriving in the UK at the Personnel Despatch and Reception Centre, Bournemouth on the 26th February 1943. From here he was posted to an Advanced Flying Training Unit, an Operational Training Unit, then finally to a Tactical Exercise Unit.
On the 10th January 1944 having completed pilot training F/O Bill Gadd was posted to No.277 Squadron RAF an Air Sea Rescue squadron which was based at RAF Shoreham, near Brighton, Sussex.
On the 6th January 1945 after a year serving the squadron W/O Bill Gadd was posted to No.453 Squadron RAAF at RAF Matlaske, Norfolk.
